Consuming cannabis without getting high is commonplace however it’s not how the media portrays cannabis. This leads to a general misconception among many non-cannabis consumers that consuming cannabis is all about smoking and getting high. I consume cannabis in a number of ways without experiencing euphoria or the high commonly associated with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) consumption.
While experiencing euphoria is welcomed by many responsible and healthy cannabis consumers, some brand new consumers, or daytime consumers, may want to avoid experiencing the high from cannabis.
Here are the main ways I consume cannabis without getting high.
Topical Cannabis Products Applied Externally
Perhaps the most surprising way to consume cannabis is by applying cannabis externally. Generally, THC in a topical form does not get into the bloodstream as it is unable to cross the blood brain barrier and create euphoria.
I personally find that topicals help me target localized joint pain, muscle soreness, scar healing and dry skin. Different infused topical products have different levels of the active compounds including THC and CBD.
CBD, cannabidiol, is one of the ways I consume cannabis internally without experiencing euphoria. I consume CBD as oil drops under the tongue, mainly to reduce anxiety and relieve mild body pain.
CBD is generally not known to cause a high however it is considered psychoactive because of the relaxing effects that may alter mental state.
Microdosing THC Products
By consuming very small amounts of THC I can get the therapeutic benefits without feeling any of the psychoactivity. Everyone’s standard dose of THC is going to be different depending on the consumption type and the experience level of the consumer.
When vaporizing or smoking cannabis without wanting to get high, I consume a High CBD strain, where the CBD to THC ratio is 21:1. When consuming an edible or a capsule my standard dose is 2.5mg THC. I reduce that amount to 1-1.5mg THC to avoid feeling the euphoria. My favorite oil drops are 25:1 CBD:THC. Again, I can consume a small amount of these, usually .25ml, throughout the day without experiencing euphoria.
Consider starting low and going slow when testing your tolerance level with any type of cannabis product.
Consuming Right Before Bed
Cannabis works for me like an herbal nightcap. I consume a small amount of an indica strain or my standard dose of a THC edible or capsule half an hour before bed. The THC present helps me relax and fall asleep, keeping me in a deeper state of sleep without any euphoria.
I am careful to not over consume edibles. On the occasion that I have, I have woken up feeling dizzy and shaky and have heeded this as a warning to stick to lower doses. In my experience, I may feel dizzy when consuming 5mg+ THC depending on other factors including food consumption, hydration and additional CBD consumed.
Cannabis in Raw Plant Form
Cannabis is a superfood containing over 400 different chemical compounds, essential oils, vitamins and acids. These cannabinoid acids in their raw form, specifically THCa and CBDa, are non-psychoactive and aren’t known to cause euphoria.
It’s not until cannabis is heated, and goes through the process of decarboxylation that these cannabinoid acids are converted into their active forms; THC and CBD.
Ultimately, self-regulation education, and personal experience is the key to a successful experience with cannabis. As always, please remember to start low and go slow with any form of cannabis products and to lock all your cannabis products securely in a lockable case.
